Role of Radiotherapy in UK Breast Cancer Treatment

Radiotherapy is a key component of breast cancer treatment in the UK, often used after surgery to destroy remaining cancer cells and reduce the risk of recurrence.

Most patients who undergo breast-conserving surgery receive radiotherapy to the breast. Some patients who have had a mastectomy may also require radiotherapy, particularly if lymph nodes are involved or the tumour was large.

Radiotherapy is delivered using high-energy beams precisely targeted at affected areas. Treatment is carefully planned using imaging to minimize exposure to healthy tissue.

Courses of radiotherapy typically last several weeks, with short daily sessions. Advances in technology have allowed for shorter treatment schedules in some cases.

Side effects may include skin irritation, fatigue, and breast discomfort. These effects are usually temporary and managed with supportive care.

Radiotherapy teams work closely with patients to monitor side effects and provide reassurance. The aim is to deliver effective treatment while maintaining quality of life.
